6-Year-Old Boy with Cerebral Palsy Walks to His U.S. Marine Father for the First Time

“When my husband left on his deployment, our 6-year-old son could not walk on his own. He has cerebral palsy. Doctors originally said that he would never walk or do much of anything. While daddy was away, he learned to walk. For his homecoming, we set it up for Michael to walk to his daddy for the first time ever! We kept the fact that he could walk a secret the whole time his dad was gone!”

My God, if that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye and tug at your heart, then nothing will. Mere words are not enough to say thank you to this Marine for the sacrifice he has made by serving our country. And there is probably not enough emotion or words to praise and to give to this family and especially this brave young boy. I can’t begin to imagine the joy that this marine felt as he had his son walk in to his arms. I truly wish that I could thank them in person for what they have given to all of us, by allowing us to share in this incredible reunion.

My son also has CP and I remember he started walking precisely at 6. My wife sacrificed her life in nursing our elder son. Now he is top student of his School in Canada with special expertise in computer. School authorities advised that he should be kept in wheelchair as he falls down while taking few steps. My wife started physical exercises at home. Also we used AFO’s (long special shoes) and corrected his gait. Presently my son is walking w/o any assistance and stopped using wheelchair. He is doing fantastic. When we were satisfied with our condition then God bestowed us with another son. We are enjoying with our small but determined family. I can realize your situation. I can at least advise to you do more work on your son otherwise his bone shall get stiff after age 14. My elder son is more intelligent and knowledgeable than my younger son. Teach him everything through computer and i’m sure he ‘ll demonstrate his excel. This type of CP patient have stage-1 category. Sorry I turned emotional seeing your son’s video. May God help you in future challenges.

I have Cerebral Palsy myself! I can see how hard this young boy had worked to be able to get this far! I’ve been there before too! My dr told my parents that I would never been able to walk or talk. Today I’m 29 years old and walking and talking and I’m actually working with disabled people. IT A GREAT FEELING TO go BEYOND what the doctors tell people!

I also struggle with a milder form of CP – and I am 45 yrs young. When I was first diagnosed with it at 18 months of age, doctors didn’t know if I would walk on my own. It took some time, lots of trips & falls, but I was walking by the age of three. I am so proud of this little guy who never gave up on this! Small miracles do happen if you believe!

Have you been referred to the option of selective dorsal Rhizotomy , a surgery option for relieving spasticity in the legs, that enables children with this condition to walk. The video of your son walking toward you and the adoration on his eyes and those of your other children is so deeply moving… words cannot fully express my feelings. Your children are wonderful examples of what is right about America… they show strength, determination, love, compassion and well deserved pride in their father. Also, your wife is a prize… to take charge of the home front and take care of your children while obviously deeply missing you… you are a very lucky man, Marine!! Your video of your son walking to his daddy for the first time really touched me. I too was born with cerebral palsy and my mom was told that she should leave me in the hospital to die! That was 43 years ago. She was told I would be a vegetable never being able to do anything on my own! Although I didn’t walk until I was 4.5, I did walk. There are very few things that I cannot do! I have lived on my own since I was 19 and have done tons of volunteer work! I don’t have very good balance but other than that I am great. Thanks for sharing your video with us! Way to go Michael!

This makes a few tears and memories come back . I left a baby girl behind when I went away in 67. My wife wanted to wake her up the morning I had to go but I could not do that. I took a last look and left! The day I got back she was napping and when she woke up she only looked at me( about 10 seconds) got a big grin and jumped on me. PS she still loves me .

Believe it or not, I saw this clip on a news website in Springfield, MO. It brought tears to my eyes – and while it may be hard to, I have cerebral palsy and started walking without a walker when *I* was also six. Your boy is such a beautiful blessing, and I want to give you hope because I’m 24 now and doing wonderfully. I got my license when I was 16, am living independently now, and am working on my master degree in counseling. Your son will be just fine. God bless!

When the Hurricane was about to strike there in North Carolina, my grand daughter and the children came here to Michigan to stay with us until it was safe to go back home. At the time, Michael was not walking. He could walk with a walker or with someone on both sides of him holding him up. I am so proud of him and my other Great Grandchildren. I thank god every day for the whole family and Prayed every day for Jeremy to come home safely.

Rhoda, by all means do NOT give up hope. Always have faith in your grandson that he will be able to walk, talk and do everything he would ever want to do, and encourage him to push himself to do just that, and to never give in to the limitations projected by others. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that CP is no match for inner strength. I have CP myself, and I learned that first hand from my parents – never, ever give up hope. They were told I’d never walk. I’m now 28, living independently, and doing just about everything I could want.

Hi. I wrote Love That Max, a blog about kids with special needs who kick butt. My son, Max, is 9 and also has CP; your son reminds me of him. We were told the worst about Max when he was born: that he’d never walk or talk, etc etc etc. I will NEVER forget the day he took his first few steps, right into my arms. This video had me sobbing from happiness for him and for you and your husband. Our kids have amazing determination (the kind that would do the military proud)! Congratulations on this amazing milestone. I know he will never stop impressing you.

Melissa, my son has cerebral palsy as well, there is a procedure out there that can help him. It is called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy. My son had a month ago and is doing amazingly… With what your son has already accomplished, he would be running to meet his dad next time…

I thought that was v touching, and the amount of effort and determination needed on the part of Michael and his Mum was phenomenal. It is right to praise them. I would like to add though that as a child I was the sister of a severely disabled brother, and so I also noticed and felt very touched by the love and adoration in the other children’s eyes, and how much they also loved to be with their Dad. They seemed lovely children too, supportive of their brother and Mum and loving their Dad and wanting hugs from him. I was really struck by how Michael’s brother’s face lit up when his Dad turned to him. All the children’s patience and unselfishness was also phenomenal. I wish blessings on all the family, and hope the Dad is given lots of time to spend with each of them and his Mum. Each of the children, courageous Michael but also his lovely brother and sisters, is precious and needs praise and recognition. God bless that family.

I was deeply moved by the love in this family. Michael walking with such determination and excitement to see his Dad; His father who stopped and let Michael walk to him and held out his arms in encouragement as you would any child taking their first steps; the other children who were in on the surprise and held themselves back while Michael walked to their Dad; the Mom who you could see helped the children prepare for their Father’s homecoming by having them make posters and special messages. all with hearts bursting with love. I am struck by how much this welcome home is a metaphor of our relationship with God. I will watch this when I start to forget what life is really about.

I saw this video the other day and it moved me very much as I have two special places in my heart….one for a soldier, and one for a fellow brother/sister with CP (I have CP myself). I’m not sure if you’ve heard about Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) but I had this done 9 months ago and it changed my life forever! If your son is a candidate, it could really open the doors for a brighter, less painful future. But this video makes me break down every time I watch it. It has everything: the family reuniting, the Marine back home safely, and that absolutely incredible little boy and his courage. This hit close to home with me. I have cerebral palsy. I didn’t learn how to walk until I was 6. My therapists helped me set up my first steps into my mom’s arms as a surprise. I had a lot of surgery and tons of therapy. It was all worth it to me. I have to use quad canes for balance, but I look at it this way walking is walking, right?

I am 48 years old, now with 3 amazing, healthy, grown children of my own. I also have 2 grand babies so far. please feel free to message me if you would lie to.

This is so touching. I cried buckets watching this! This is probably the best and most touching video in the 209 pages of videos that I have watched on this blog.
