It started out as a typical Monday for one sixth-grader at John F. Kennedy Elementary School. Little did Payton Stephen know, her father — Chief Warrant Officer Darrell Stephen — who just got back after serving eight months in Afghanistan, had plans to surprise her at school.
Sgt. Jayson Shaw showed up at his daughter’s school 3 months early and wrapped up for Christmas; home from Afghanistan. During Kennedy’s, his daughter, 5th grade play for her school Tuesday they put the box backstage and, after the show wrapped, told students it was a special surprise to be given to a student randomly drawn from a bowl, but Kennedy’s name was the only one inside. When she removed the bow on the box, her dad popped out, and she immediately jumped into his arms with tears in her eyes.
