On October 26, 1942 the S.S. President Coolidge was transporting troops to the Espirtu Santo harbor when it struck a pair of mines that blew a hole in the back of the ship. More than 5,300 people including Captain Euart made it to shore. But when he heard that there were troops trapped inside of the infirmary, Captain Euart went back and saved at least six men before running out of time to make it back out safe. Seven decades later divers found the remains and the Army stuck by their word of not leaving a man behind and brought Captain Euart back home to his family so that they could finally lay him to rest.
