Marine, new father killed in car crash returning from hospital visit with wife, newborn

A Massachusetts family is grieving the loss of a father days after the birth of his daughter.

Kevin Quinn was driving his SUV west on Route 28 on Saturday, when a sedan crossed the center line and crashed into his vehicle, Barnstable police say of the preliminary investigation.

Quinn was extricated from the wreckage of his vehicle and taken to South Shore Hospital where he died of his injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, 22-year-old Mickey Rivera, of Fall River, was pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger in his vehicle remains in critical condition.

Quinn was combat veteran who survived two deployments to Afghanistan. Following his second tour of duty, he married Kara Sullivan, a fellow Marine. Back home on the Cape, the couple purchased their first home in his hometown and started a business, Quinn Excavating and Septic. He planned to pursue a career in law enforcement.

The couple welcomed their first child early Wednesday morning.

“Kevin was very much excited but nervous about being a father,” the family wrote in a tribute. “We all told him that he was going to do just fine as a dad and that we felt really bad for any guy that wanted to date his daughter when she was old enough.”

He died three days following the birth of his daughter, the evening before she was to come home.

The family has created an online fundraiser to offset the cost of laying Quinn to rest and support his wife and daughter following his death. Since it was started over the weekend, more than $100,000 has been raised.
