With her heart heavy after seeing how Hurricane Harvey impacted the people of Texas, Gina Austin decided to pack up gear and supplies, leave her California home and try to rescue who ever she could. Having served twenty-two years in the Navy, she says her time spent in Texas was like a bad deployment. While she worked with a rescue group doing so much good, Gina saw a lot of evil. Not only did they get shot at, seven state troopers were run over by a car. But the look on the little boy’s face when Gina reunited him with his chihuahua that she rescued made all the difference.
Michigan National Guard Elainnie Ingram traded what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life to help with the relief of Hurricane Irma. Receiving notice just ten days before her wedding that she would be deploying on her wedding weekend, Elainnie didn’t even consider trying to get out of duty. “I signed up for this six years ago. So it's my time to do it, and it just so happened to be the wedding weekend but you can plan another wedding,” she said.
